What Does “Post-COVID” Mean?

All of us get many holiday greetings and good wishes for the new year. Practically every single one of them mentions how terrible 2020 was and how everyone can’t wait for the year to be over. Sure, this year was certainly horrible in many ways, but there was a lot of good that came from it, too! And let me say this also: While I want 2021 to be wonderful from the get-go, the novel coronavirus, clearly, does not have a calendar and it has no clue that we are all expecting it to ‘behave itself’ starting January 1, 2021.

This year taught us how connected we all really are. It’s too bad that it took a nasty virus to demonstrate to us that what happens in China, or anywhere else for that matter, can affect millions in every corner of the world, in the blink of an eye. 2020 also taught us that we must all be more considerate of each other’s vulnerabilities and conditions. That, in return, brought to the surface more compassionate behavior, mutual accountability, and countless acts of kindness.

From a business standpoint, we all learned a lot during the past year, too. It became clear that no matter how big an airline or established a manufacturer is, a microscopic virus can bring either to its knees. Executives realized that strategic plans are just that – plans – not certainties. Many found out that business models can change and those organizations who changed them were able to operate, survive, and even thrive under unprecedented circumstances. From virtual meetings to touchless deliveries to expedited R&D to changing production lines quickly and much more – we know we can do things differently now and do them quite well (and we may even like it)!

As all of us are looking forward to a better future, we should recognize that the ‘post-COVID’ era will not mean going back to how things were. Yes, there is comfort in familiarity and in doing things ‘like we used to’, but we all know, on some level, that nothing will ever be the same. Let’s embrace the change, be smart about remembering and implementing what we have learned, and do even better in 2021 and beyond.
